Deana on Keeping Your Eye on the Target

We live in a society of instant gratification, most of the time when we want something we can just reach out and grab it. With technology being what it is, if we need information or want to get in touch with someone, we just have to reach into our pocket and grab our blackberry or go to our computer. The whole concept of having to wait to achieve anything has gotten very difficult for us to grasp, we don't have to practice patience like we used to in the good old days.

We need to realize that reaching our goals is a marathon, not a sprint. Although I have never run a marathon myself, I know a few marathon runners. It is quite fascinating the amount of both mental and physical strength and drive one must have to successfully complete a marathon.

From what I understand, it is important that you position yourself at the starting line according to your pace. Resist the urge to speed up too early, starting slow is key to finishing in good form. Stay calm, relaxed, focused, with rhythmic breathing. When you hit the wall, slow down and visualize the finish line.

Reaching our goals is very much the same. Go at your own pace, don't worry about everyone else and how quickly they are moving towards their goals. Run your own race. Slow, focused, consistent and rhythmic action is key. When challenges arise, focus on the goal and visualize yourself achieving it. Keep your eye on the target, and keep putting one foot in front of the other. Slow and steady will win the race!
