Living in the Moment

Are you a dog lover? I am, always have been. I believe that our pets can teach us many valuable lessons in life. The amount of unconditional love they share with us makes having a pet one of the greatest gifts we can be given.

An important lesson I can learn from my boston terrior (Guido) is how to live in the moment. He is never concerned with how we are going to pay the bills, if we have enough dog food left for tomorrow, or where we are going to go for our walk after work. Guido lives and breaths in the right now.

He truly lives each and every moment to the fullest. When Guido eats, he savors every bite, when he plays, he plays hard with such focus, that he sees nothing else besides his ball. When its time for him to rest, he doesn't worry about when he will have to get up to go outside and do his business. When he goes for a walk, he is fully alert with all of his senses, taking in each and every scent, sight, and sound. In Guido's world there is no yesterday, no tomorrow, only right now; and right now is pretty amazing!

This is why our pets are so great at the unconditional love, they don't wallow in the pain of yesterday when you had to discipline them for eating your favorite pair of shoes. They only care about this moment right now cuddled up with you on the couch, while you rub their belly. Life is good!

How can we do the same? How do we let go of yesterday's disappointments and forget about the worries of tomorrow? Drinking in each moment, lapping up its blessings?

When we love, love unconditionally. When we play, focus and play full out. When its time to rest; relax, sit, stay, and take in every breath and savor every moment. Live and enjoy the right now, this is a dog's life.
